Besides being a great addition to your landscape there are so many reasons to grow your own organic produce.
Quality
Of course it’s always been the case that you can’t beat homegrown food for freshness, quality, and taste. Store bought tomato versus vine-ripened backyard tomato? No comparison. And good flavor goes hand-in-hand with good nutrition. Store-bought produce is usually harvested under-ripe and then takes three to four weeks to hit the shelves, losing nutrients every day along the way.
Variety
Modern agriculture has simplified produce offerings into a few varieties that pack, travel and store well. But that doesn’t mean they are the best varieties out there. There are literally THOUSANDS of varieties of most common vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, corn etc. It’s so much fun to try different ones each year and find your favorites!
Health
Fewer nutrients are the least of the health issues when it comes to conventionally farmed produce. The studies are clear that synthetic pesticides cause cancer and are implicated in birth defects, nerve damage and genetic mutations. And the effects of genetically modified (GMO) seeds on humans are still largely unknown. When you grow your own food you know exactly what you are putting on your plate and in your body.
Food Safety
In recent years with all the produce recalls, food-safety has become another reason for growing it yourself. Who wants to worry about whether their lettuce is contaminated with listeria, their spinach with salmonella or their strawberries with E. coli (all recent food recalls we’ve seen)?
Education
You can teach your children or grandchildren where their food actually comes from and that it doesn’t come from the supermarket but from seeds and the soil. You might learn something in the process yourself too!
Environment
The damages conventional farming does to our environment are multi-fold—soil erosion, groundwater contamination from pesticides, and excessive energy consumption to name a few. When you grown your own organic produce you are one part of reducing that impact.
Community
While growing your own food can be a way of becoming independent and self-sustaining, it’s also a way to come together with others. There’s nothing better than sharing the harvest with those around you while contributing to improving your local eco system.
